Statement:
Welcome to “Painting the Clouds With Sunshine”! I hope you will enjoy browsing my artwork. I pride myself on the comprehensive range of art and design services I offer: I describe myself as an all-round Artist-Designer - in the old-fashioned sense of the word – as were the designers of old whom I admire so much.

I am not just 'old-fashioned' in terms of my personal style and tastes: as well as endeavouring to authentically recreate the style of the Art Deco period in my creative work, it is equally my aim to deliver old-fashioned service, courtesy and quality, and without marketing gimmicks or hype. Digital technology is an amazing and exciting thing – it enables me to be 'speaking to you' now, for instance – but I use it to enhance and support, not replace, my manual skills.

My work is always carefully researched and is characterized by accurate period detail throughout. Combining sound historical knowledge and meticulous attention to detail with my theatrical instincts, I endeavour to capture the elegance of the past, to take us beyond the stress and frantic pace of modern existence back to the gentler, slower life we all yearn for: when good taste and good manners were the watchwords, when pleasures were simple, when sentimentality, gentility, niceness, and prettiness were not derided, and when 'Glamour' and 'Elegance' really meant something!

As well as the more obvious areas of applied art and design I list, I also do Period Consulting/Historical Advising, Photographic Styling, Editorial/Copywriting, Proof-reading, Archiving, Historical Research, Curating, Lecturing. I will never claim I can do something I cannot, so if you do not see exactly what you want, please ask me: chances are high I can do it, but if I cannot supply what you need, I am likely to be able to recommend someone who can.

I believe that we should learn from the past and must keep alive traditional, tried and tested skills, techniques, values and standards, and thus preserve the best of the past to enjoy in the present. I hope I achieve this with my work, which expresses the romance and nostalgia I feel so deeply in my spirit, creating the images that are close to my heart.

Enjoy painting the clouds with sunshine with me!

Vita / Lebenslauf:
Martin Faulkner... was born in London - at the end of an era, and approximately 60 years too late! His colourful and varied career has taught him many diverse art and craft skills, all connected by a common theme and style. Martin is a versatile all-round designer in the old-fashioned sense – a true Renaissance Man.

A winner in the National Portraiture Foundation 'Sir Charles Wheeler' Awards of 1979, he went on to attend the Herts College of Art & Design at St Albans. Always eager to try something new and expand his repertoire, he enjoys experimenting with different media, and continues researching and studying traditional techniques from first principles/primary sources wherever possible. His work has appeared in the showcase publication 'The Best of British Retail Design', and he has been profiled in the nostalgia magazine 'Best of British'.

He started his career painting murals and making novelty 'character' signs. He soon worked his way up from paste-up artist at a small Hertfordshire advertising agency, to designer/visualiser with a design consultancy in Covent Garden, London's creative centre at the time. Gaining experience and confidence, he was then able to fulfil his dream of becoming a freelance illustrator.

Martin's love of the past grew out of his earliest recognisable interest – trains – having been born just in time to savour the very last days of steam. Trains led to vintage cars, which led to period fashions, dance band and swing music, and a passion for the Golden Age of Hollywood as he grew up. A decade of his career was spent pursuing professionally what started as a keen leisure interest: ballroom dancing, first as one half of the Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers-inspired 1930s dance cabaret act Ruby Fox & Johnny Martin for 5 years, and then as principal male dancer and design director of the acclaimed historical dance and drama company Baroque 'n' Roll (1485 – 1959) for 8 years. This led him into the heritage and education sectors, where he taught dance and social history to pupils from primary age to adult groups. He also managed an antique centre for a year and dealt in antiques for several years.

Sound historical knowledge and meticulous attention to detail, combined with his theatrical experience, enable Martin to successfully capture the sophistication, glamour and elegance of the Art Deco Era, and to transport us back to days that some of us feel we can remember, even if we are not old enough – and fortunate enough – to have been there.
